The double-height hallway
Most 4-bed detached houses built since the 1990s have an open or galleried hallway: the stairs rise into a void that runs from the ground floor right up to the first-floor ceiling. It looks impressive because it is a lot of wall.
In practice, that's often 5 to 6 metres of continuous vertical surface. Which means:
- A scaffold tower, not a ladder. You cannot safely or accurately cut in a 6m wall from a ladder over a stairwell. A tower has to be brought in, built, moved, and taken down. That alone is the better part of a day.
- Stair-leg access. Towers over stairs need adjustable legs or a stair deck. It's specialist kit and it's slow to reposition.
- Everything cut by hand. The junction where the wall meets that high ceiling is a straight line someone has to cut, standing on a platform, for its whole length.
- The landing balustrade. Spindles are the slowest woodwork in any house. A galleried landing can have 30 or more, each needing to be brushed on all sides.
